Today’s post is about idols, yes, but to add a bit of random to it, I’m starting with a reference to the famed Sun Studios in Memphis, TN.

Sun Studios is where musicians like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins all recorded some classic and hugely popular songs that are still loved today. When visiting the studio, you can often hear people ask, “How many musical legends stood in this same spot?”

It is such a neat feeling to be standing in a place like Sun Studios and think that these people stood there, too. But, we won’t find them there now. We can’t see them or meet them, but we love thinking about them having a presence there. We start form ideas of these people as if they were more than human and we make them into our idols.

The distractions of everyday life can make it difficult to stay on a straight path towards God. In a world full of sin, we have idols in many different aspects of our lives. Even the good things, like our jobs, our families, and the food we eat, can become idols if we start pouring too much of ourselves into them.

Perhaps one of the most well-known Bible verses is Exodus 20:3-4, which states, “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.”

What do you do to try and keep your main focus on Christ? Is it easy or difficult for you?

Fun Fact: According to Time Magazine, the most expensive lock of hair ever sold was Elvis Presley’s… for $115,000. Crazy, right?
