Sometimes it’s easy (and unintentional) to find ourselves defining God within boundaries that make the most sense to us. Just as often as this can happen, many of us also like to think (whether we admit it or not) that God judges others the same way we do. The problem is, none of us know for sure what God will do. We know a lot about Him from the Bible, but we can’t explain how He would feel about our every action and decision.
God is wrathful. God is forgiving. God is jealous. God is merciful. He has destroyed entire cities because of their sin, but then sent His only Son to die for each one of us.
To say that God would approve of your morals and disapprove of someone else’s is a dangerous way of thinking. We are not only bringing God to a more human level by doing this, but we might also be putting ourselves on a higher pedestal than what is deserved.
Sure… we all judge. Sometimes we need to rely on our judgments so we are aware of our surroundings and the people who might be a threat to us, but we are still warned against judging others for the sake of condemning them.
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” -Matthew 7:1-2
