An all-too-common question that is asked by believers and non-believers alike is, “Why me?”
Most of us try to be good people, usually making an effort to do the right thing, so when devastating events occur in our lives, we often blame God. In these moments, some turn to Him and some turn away. When people aren’t very familiar with Scripture, they assume that the Bible promises peace, love, and joy for all Christians, when in reality, that’s not the case at all.
“There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: righteous men who get what the wicked deserve, and wicked men who get what the righteous deserve.” (Ecclesiastes 8:14)
Sin is responsible for this. We are granted free will and we are all corrupt (even as Christians) because we are all fallen, so no one is exempt from pain.
God does tell us, however, to, “Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.” –Luke 17:3-4
He is saying that no matter what, we need to forgive others when they ask for our forgiveness. Even when we are repeatedly hurt by some people, forgiveness is still more important than holding on to the pain that they have inflicted. I wouldn’t say that sounds very fair either, but hey, the Bible never said, “Life is fair.” It did say, though,“And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household,”” -Acts 16:31
To me, that sounds like the best promise that we could have.
